Partial Hospitalization Program

Who a Partial Hospitalization Program Is For

A partial hospitalization program, or PHP, gives you structured treatment for most of the weekday, then sends you home each evening. It sits between living at a facility and a weekly appointment, and it is often the right fit for people who thought those were the only two choices.

Continue Your Treatment After Residential Care

Going from residential treatment, where every hour is planned, straight to a weekly appointment is one of the most common ways to lose progress. PHP lowers the structure one step at a time.

It works in the other direction too. When weekly therapy is no longer enough, but living at a facility is more than you need, PHP fills that gap.

Because you go home each night, your living situation matters. PHP fits best with a stable home or sober housing, and an assessment tells you whether it is the right level.

Substance Use Partial Hospitalization Program

Daily structured care for alcohol and drug use.

Mental Health Partial Hospitalization Program

Daily support for depression, anxiety, trauma, and more.

Dual Diagnosis Partial Hospitalization Program

Mental health and substance use treated together, not one after the other.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

PHP is the most intensive form of outpatient care. Programming usually runs from mid-morning through the afternoon, Monday through Friday, and exact hours vary by facility.

A typical day mixes group therapy, individual sessions, skills work such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and plain-language lessons on what is happening in the brain and body. Skills practiced in group at 11 a.m. get tested at home that evening, and anything that went wrong is back in the room the next morning while it is still fresh.

Are Partial Hospitalization Programs Effective?

For many people, yes. PHP works best when the level matches the need: enough daily structure to change direction, plus a safe place to sleep each night. Clinicians use the ASAM Criteria to make that match, weighing withdrawal risk, health, readiness, and the home environment. Most people later step down to an intensive outpatient program as things stabilize.

FAQs About Our Partial Hospitalization Program

The treatment area at our facility.

Most health plans cover PHP. Federal parity law requires most plans to treat mental health and substance use benefits on terms comparable to medical care. Coverage is contracted facility by facility, so network status has to be checked for the specific location. Our admissions team verifies your plan and explains any out-of-pocket costs before you start.

Hours and intensity. PHP fills most of the weekday, often five days a week. An intensive outpatient program runs about three hours, usually in the morning, three to five days a week, and leaves the rest of the day open for work or school. Most people move from PHP down to IOP as things stabilize, and an assessment decides which one fits.

Usually not full-time, since PHP takes most of the weekday. Many people use job-protected leave for a serious health condition. Your HR team can explain the options, and FMLA can protect your job during treatment in many cases. If stepping away from work is not possible, IOP or evening programming may fit, depending on what the assessment finds.

No. Some people step down into PHP from residential care, and others step up when weekly outpatient care stops being enough. Both paths are common. What matters is that the level matches the situation, including whether the home you return to each night supports the work.

A few situations call for a different level first:

  • Immediate danger: Call 911, or call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
  • Withdrawal: Medically supervised detox has to come first, especially after heavy daily drinking or long-term benzodiazepine use.
  • An unsafe home: If the substance is in the house or home life drives the problem, residential care is usually safer.

PHP runs at Peachtree Recovery Solutions in Peachtree Corners, Georgia, for substance use, with structured sober apartments available. It also runs at Peachtree Wellness Solutions in Peachtree City, Georgia, and at Nashville Treatment Solutions in Tennessee, which offers mental health and substance use tracks with housing, community, and virtual options. Where both conditions are present, dual diagnosis care treats them together, and family involvement runs alongside.
